When we got our first home, I was eager to paint the walls in fabulous, living color! After all, nothing screams "I don't own this place" louder than white walls. Over the years, I've painted and re-painted multiple times in different but coordinating colors through the entire upstairs- every wall except the closets which have been left the original antique white paint color. And now I've come to realize, I'm sort of over it. I love color but perhaps a fewer number of them will make the house "flow" better. Even so, there is something so cheerful about a "pop of color". Perhaps a good "pop" … [Read more...]
Ikea Project Challenge
Last week I had the opportunity to join with 75 other local bloggers (and their cute kiddos) for breakfast and shopping at Ikea in Draper. Like all people on budgets, IKEA is a 'veritable cornucopia' of great ideas for prices real people can afford. IKEA has just produced their new fall catalog and we got to get a 'sneak peak' of some of the fun new things they'll have available this season. They're launching a new line of fabrics: They also have some fun new lamps and things with less of a modern edge for those who prefer more classic lines- and hey, some of those 'classic' … [Read more...]
DIY Blogger House: Interior Design & Reveal Party
I had a great time meeting and reconnecting with lots of local bloggers at the big "reveal" party for the DIY Blogger House. My stuff was exterior so I wasn't under the same shroud of secrecy as the bloggers and Interior Designer adhered to indoors. I'll share a few highlights here then you can go and check out the blogs of the various bloggers who did the projects to get more ideas and tutorials. Suffice it to say, the ladies (and gent) lived up to their reputations! Details of project from each of the bloggers/ designers for the Bangerter Homes DIY Blogger House @ … [Read more...]
DIY Blogger House Tutorial: Hanging Daybed Swing, Part 2
Are you still with us? I know, I know, this is a BIG project. Do you need a reminder why it's worth it? Complete this project and you can be relaxing in this kind of space! Where to Hang: One of the most important things is hanging this on the RIGHT structure and in the RIGHT way. Have I mentioned before that the swing is heavy? It's easily 100 pounds. It can potentially hold an entire family so consider how much weight that is in addition. Also, weight in motion behaves differently than weight which is merely suspended. This is very important to understand to avoid … [Read more...]
DIY Blogger House Tutorial: Hanging Daybed Swing
I am so SUPER excited to post a tutorial for our "Hanging Daybed Swing" thing-a-ma-gig. This little number is a cross between a hammock and a porch swing that has all the benefits of BOTH and the drawbacks of neither. I'll be honest, it's kinda killing me to leave this baby at the DIY Blogger House- I want it for MY pergola! Imagine spending an afternoon reading to your kids on the hanging bed or an evening lazily watching the stars as you sway gently in the cool breeze and relax. Are you feeling it yet? Wouldn't that experience SO be worth all the pain of building your own … [Read more...]
DIY Blogger House Tutorial: Vintage Door Arbor
The DIY Blogger House is located within the Daybreak development in South Jordan, Utah. Daybreak strongly advocates the concept of "sustainability" and are big believers in using recycled products. Knowing this, I decided to test that resolve by creating an arbor for the home from vintage recycled doors which I purchased at "George's Architectural Salvage". If you have time and you're patient, you can likely pick up the doors for this project over time at a cost somewhere between cheap and free. However, I'm not patient nor did I have time to wait so I bought a well-matched pair … [Read more...]
DIY Blogger House Tutorial: How to Make a Succulent Wreath
As we've discussed, the Conservation Garden Park staff has created a landscape plan for the 2012 Parade of Homes. Since the house we're working on is the DIY (do-it-yourself) Blogger House there are some DIY projects involved that are intended to be replicable by everyday homeowners. As that is the case, who better to create some DIY projects than our Club? I (Cynthia) put out a call to the group on Facebook and was happy to have some help for this project from Melody and her daughter. And yes- making a succulent wreath is so easy you CAN have your kids help! What You'll Need: 1. … [Read more...]
DIY Blogger House: Landscape Plan
It's done! The planting plan for the DIY Blogger House is finished and ready to go! I am so excited to get it implemented! The landscape will be installed by Aposhian Landscapes- a company with a great reputation and extensive experience so we'll be in good hands! Aposhian has a turf farm, nursery and landscape installation practice so they are certainly full-service! I am excited to be using their "Drought King" grass blend on this project. Their 'Drought King' turf is still a Kentucky Blue Grass blend but requires about 15-20% LESS water than standard blue grass blends- that may not … [Read more...]
